Full time course

This course provides an exciting, well-established and challenging programme that helps adults of any age to engage and build confidence in their interest in Art & Design and often helps them to make aspirational and life-changing decisions about their futures. The course work is broad and varied to help students develop ideas and skills that pinpoint this progression and assist them to build a new and focussed portfolio suited to their interests. 1 year programme: The course runs from September to June. It usually comprises studio work carried out in college, spread over 5 days. Students are also expected to spend an average of at least 5 hours a week on unsupervised work. 2 year programme: For those with limited time or family commitments, the course can be taken over 2 years. Attendance is 2 days a week at college, between 9.30 am and 3.30 pm, plus some work at home is required. The course content is the same as for full-time students but is spread over 2 years.

What will I study?

You have the opportunity to explore a range of different disciplines, this enables you to explore the scope of creative art and design education and to build practical and creative skills to develop your own creative tool kit.

The core of the course is based on drawing and contextual studies. Diagnostic periods of study are allocated to painting, 3D work, textile design, printmaking, 3D, ceramics, graphics, illustration and photography. One-to-one and group tutorials will help you to coordinate and organise your work. An important part of the tutorials is to assemble a portfolio of your work, including sketchbooks, notebooks and other evidence of study or creative activity, all of which could be submitted as part of an application for a Higher Education Art & Design course or for employment or to support an application to an exhibition.

Maths and English

We offer core modules in Maths and English.

Work experience

Live projects and work experience are integral to the course. You will be encouraged to seek work experience to develop your CV by including a range of exciting elements. You will take part in personal statement and CV writing tutorials and tutors will pass on exciting opportunities that suit your skills and interests.

There are a variety of career opportunities in the creative industries, such as 2D or 3D fine artist, designer, graphics, media, illustration, product design, fashion and textiles, printmaking, teaching, curation, etc.

What do I need to join?

You will need two GSCEs at grade 5 in English and maths, and will need to sit an entrance test. Specialist pathways may require higher grades: these will be discussed as part of your interview for the course.

How will I learn?

Facilities include 2D and 3D studios, computer facilities, a specialist library, workshop, photography facilities and a print room. All the course tutors are also professional artists or designers. The relationship between staff and students is respectful and supportive. How will I know how I am doing?

The course is validated and moderated by APT Awards on behalf of the nationally recognised Access course scheme. Your final assessment is based on an ongoing assessment of all coursework units, and a final exhibition of your work.

Are there any extra costs?

You will need to pay for materials, tuition fees and exam fees, as well as educational visits if appropriate. Finance for materials will be discussed at interview. Further advice on financial support for the course is available from the Enrolment Centre.

What can I do next?

Typically, this course leads to further study on academic or vocational courses at a university level and, ultimately, to a career within the Creative Industries.
