Foundation Degree or HND in a relevant subject GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or above.

Course content

This BA (Hons) Musical Theatre refines and consolidates the student's musical theatre skills through technique classes, workshops and full scale productions. Students will extend their critical understanding and knowledge of the genre and industry.

The degree is delivered at the South West Academy of Dramatic Arts which has excellent facilities including the 250 seat Olympus theatre, the Loft studio theatre, 4 dance studios, acting studios and technical workshops. It is only a 10 minute walk from Parkway Railway Station and is only a few miles from both the M4 and M5.

The degree aims to provide the student with excellent practical performance skills underpinned by a rigorous academic understanding of Musical Theatre. The degree draws on the professional and industry experience of our lectures and a range of visiting lectureres. It will develop personal, professional and transferable skills that will equip students for a career in a rapidly evolving theatrical/performance media based environment and provide a foundation for continuous development of these skills. The degree will develop self-confidence, motivation and communication in order to thrive in an increasingly competitive industry.

  • Touring Theatre
  • Solo Performer
  • Practical Research Project

The course addresses the study of musical theatre through developing technique in dance, singing and acting linked to performance in a variety of musical theatre genres. Practical explorations and related performance tasks provide a context for the acquisition of critical and analytical skills. This is supplemented by a combination of technique classes, lectures, seminars, workshops (as appropriate to each module), and the required reading for these modules.

Assessment will be carried out through essays, reflective journals, viva voce, presentations, dissertation, practical examinations and performance in full scale productions.


On completion of the degree students can continue onto post-graduate studies at the University of Gloucestershire or another University of their choice.
