Access to Higher Education - Sports Science Pathway

Full time course


This course is designed for adults returning to education who want to gain access to university level education in a range of sport and sport science subjects. Are you interested in how the human anatomy really works during sport and exercise? Do you want to learn both the practical and theoretical basis of sports coaching? Are you fascinated by the science behind sports? If so, this course is for you. The objective is to enhance your academic and vocational profile to facilitate progress to a higher level.

What will I study?

You will study human anatomy, sport psychology, fitness and training and sports coaching, as well as undertaking a scientific project. The objective is to enhance your academic and vocational profile to facilitate progress to a higher level.

How long is the course?

1 year full-time (3/4 days per week). Classes will be timetabled wherever possible between 9.30 am and 4.00 pm to take into account childcare issues and/or employment.

How will I learn?

Classroom study will be used to teach you in an informative and interactive way. The course will be assessed through a range of differing assignments collated into a course portfolio. The great majority of the assessments will be coursework based, together with some exams, presentations and practical project work.

What do I need to join?

You will need two GCSEs at grade 5 in English and maths, and will need to sit an entrance test.Specialist pathways may require higher grades: these will be discussed as part of your interview for the course.

How will I know how I am doing?

Assessment is continuous and consists of coursework, portfolio building and regular one- to-one time with a personal tutor. Learners are able to check their own grades with access to Pro-Monitor.

Are there any extra costs?

Alongside the fee for the course, material fees will be required at enrolment. Learners are entitled to the 19+ loan to help with the course fee.

What can I do next?

Access courses are designed to enable learners to progress onto the higher education course of their choosing, many of which are offered here at the college. Students are supported through the UCAS process by their personal tutors and will be given specialist advice and guidance about their future career pathways.

  • Higher Education, i.e. former learners have progressed onto sport-specific programmes at Liverpool John Moore and Bath Universities, respectively
  • Sports Coach/Trainer

Tuition Fees

Between the ages of 16-18 you do not need to pay tuition or exam fees for your course. If you are between the ages of 19 and 23 and have not achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification before, you will not need to pay tuition, exam or material fees using the Level 2 or 3 Entitlement. If you are aged 19 or over, studying a Level 3-6 and a Level 3 Entitlement does not apply, you will need to pay the full cost of the course. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with the fees. Please contact the College directly for the most up to date fees – these may be subject to change.
